Powells Grove Church believes in the vital importance of prayer, preaching, and praise. Everyone is encouraged to become active in the spiritual life of the church; prayer is practiced, the preaching is powerful, and everyone is invited and encouraged to join together in praise.
We also recognize the need for evangelism and discipleship; the Church has been commissioned to share the gospel and make disciples. This local church is supported by multiple ministries and departments that serve various age groups and needs within the Body of Christ.
Some ministries that are active within our church each week include:
Sunday School – A ministry uniquely positioned to serve as powerful tool for both evangelism and discipleship, the Sunday School meets each Sunday morning from 10:00-10:45. The Word of God is taught in an age-appropriate and engaging way. Children and teens meet for Sunday School classes in the Family Life Center while adults meet for Bible-teaching in the main sanctuary.
Music – The music ministry plays an important role in the church. The Bible commands us to “sing unto him a new song; play skillfully with a loud noise” (Psalm 33:3). We love to worship the Lord in music and in singing. Our music is varied in style but unified in purpose; no matter who is singing – the congregation, choir, various ensembles, or soloists – the purpose is to offer praise and worship to Jesus Christ.
Children’s Ministry – Children ages 5-12 meet in the Family Life Center each Wednesday night at 7:30 for Children’s Church. The staff and teachers present the gospel and the Truth of God’s Word using drama, puppets, games, object lessons, and more. The Children’s Ministry also offers an annual summer Vacation Bible School as well as various trips and fun activities throughout the year.
Youth – We believe that the youth should be integrally connected and involved with the life of the church. The young people are not simply relegated to “the youth department” but are encouraged to become involved in the spiritual life of the congregation. However, the youth ministry does work to provide special times of worship, fun, and fellowship specifically for our teens and youth. Youth activities are regularly scheduled on Friday nights; these Friday nights may consist of special youth services, game nights, or trips to youth rallies and conferences at other locations.
Adult Evangelism and Discipleship – Jesus instructed us to “go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled” (Luke 14:23). He also commanded us to “make disciples” (Matthew 28:19). We seek to fulfill this great commission not only through witnessing and outreach but also by offering opportunities to learn and grow in God. We are excited about teaching Bible studies; if you would like a free Bible study, click here. We also regularly offer Discipleship classes for those who are new to the faith or are simply seeking to learn more about God and His Word.
Prayer – This is the great call to God’s people – the call to prayer. Jesus declared “my house shall be called the house of prayer” (Matthew 21:13). Prayer is promoted throughout every ministry and department of the Church. The Church regularly meets in the prayer rooms for united prayer before each service, and also meets throughout the week for prayer.
Other Ministries are active within the Church throughout the year including special events and opportunities for Ladies and the ELITE (our seniors age 60+). The nursing home ministry also visits the Lawrence County Nursing Center for a Sunday afternoon service on the first Sunday of each month.
